Stop the Texts. Stop the Wrecks. Campaign

www.stoptextsstopwrecks.org

Stop the Texts. Stop the Wrecks is a national campaign put together by The Ad council, The State Attorneys General and The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This campaign aims to alert the danger of texting while driving.

Stop the Texts. Stop the Wrecks is a viral campaign that makes use of the social networks, such as Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. The purpose of this project was the construction of a main web site connected to all of the dedicated channels in each of these networks.

The project had a lot of front end work for visual and speed performance effects. CSS and Javascript techniques were used in order to add more dynamics and attractiveness, envisioning a better user experience.

The focus on the back end work was on the connection to the social networks API. Such connections enable the users to manifest their opinion about texting while driving in their social profiles, without having to leave the web site. Using official documentations and other sources the API connections turned out to be ver flexible and easy to be implemented.

In addition to having connection to the social media networks for better promoting, the web site is also accessible to the visually impaired, following the 508 compliance. This was extremely important since it is required by law that all government entities offer online content that is accessible to users with physical disabilities.

United Nations Federal Credit Facebook App

www.facebook.com/unfcu

Start Smart 2011 is a Facebook Application for The United Federal Credit Union.

This FB app helps UNFCU members to pursue a college education by offering them a scholarship. To win the scholarship one must complete all sections of the app, which consists of three pages, each with a form to be fill out.

The app was built with the Facebook PHP SDK, a framework that makes the connection with Facebook's API be very straightforward. The form fields were handled with a combination of PHP, MySQL and AJAX, which gives a more dynamic experience to the user. All client side validation was done in Jquery.

Since Start Smart was an international promotion, it was important to have this app working in all these browsers. That said, this project was constructed to work in major browsers such as IE 7, 8 and 9, Chrome, Firefox and Safari. Some style hack for IE under version 9.

Is interesting to note that the app contains personal information, so it was necessary a minimum level of security against possible malicious attacks. Especially in the last part of the form, where it was a concern to make sure that images were being uploaded and not some script that could put the app under malicious attacks.

National Center for Children in Poverty

pathways.nccp.org

This project is referred to as The Pathways Project

The Pathways Project is an online application that helps organizations to gather information about the community they live in, with a series of online forms. The collected information is converted to statistics, which helps members of a group to evaluate their goals as an organization.

The project had been already built for a few months when it came in. The task was more of a tune up to improve the information architecture in different areas of the website, with the major improvements done on the web forms. The web forms weren't working as expected, and rounds of revision With a few rounds of revision were necessary to repair this web site and enhance its overall functionality.

PHP was the technology used in this application to build the communication between client and server. Everything was hardcode with no support of a framework. There were a few cosmetics corrections but mostly the work kept more in between front and back end.

The key points of this project were the storage, processing and combination of information. Adapting to a project that was already up and running was also crucial to get the most of the deadline.

Guia 15 Anos

www.guia15anos.com.br

Guia 15 Anos is an online magazine that targets the 15 year old girls in one of Brazil's favorite city, Florianopolis.

Mainly, the website covers all the major events for teenage girls in Florianopolis, but it also has other features, such as educational content, polls and reviews of the latests trends in the teen world.

Built in Pressflow for Drupal 6, this web site was made to support a great amount of content, specially the thousands of pictures that are uploaded each week, and at the same time enabling users to have a fast and reliable experience. With Drupal's modular framework, it became easy to bend the web site to the direction that I wanted. A number of modules were used, but to name a few, the Views and the ImageCache module were the ones being constantly used. I also developed a light custom module to have a special functionality needed.

This project runs in a LAMP installation made in an amazon instance. The varnish technique was applied in the server in order to enhance the overall speed of the website.

Fiver Children Foundation

www.fiver.org

I completely revamped the their website, giving another look-and-feel to their presence on the internet, and currently administer it.

This website had a few challenges for myself: First, because the old website was not user friendly, I had to add dynamics to the content, using Flash animations, Jquey slider and accordion effect, and CSS effects to create an animated template. Another challenge was the customization of the donation component for Joomla, Jdonation. The client wanted to have a custom template for the donation pages, something that Jdonation does not offer by default, although, the component can be customized, and that helped me to improve my knowledge of the MVC design pattern, and had me to use more PHP to create new variables , Javascript for loop statements and MYSQL to monitor the database queries.

At the moment, parts of the website are being built, and Fiver staff and I are having periodically meetings to talk more about how we can improve the website.

Fiver Benefit

www.fiverbenefit.org

Fiver benefit is an annual event, and this is the second consecutive year that I make this website for Fiver Children Foundation.

On this website I was the developer, and a designer took care of a layout concept for the website, which is great, because working with other designers can only expand your knowledge and improve your team work. After a few design concepts we had a final layout ready to be put into a content management system framework. This website didn't present many challenges since it had the same features from the previous one, I only had to adapt the functionality to what the client wanted, and this only sharpened my programming skills. Basically my task was to customize the donation component, using PHP and JavaScript mostly.

The results achieved this year were superior than 2010, the number of donations are higher and the Fiver brand is getting more value and recognition according to the Fiver staff.

Do the Pants Dance

www.dothepantsdance.com

Do the pants dance is a website music blog that sells custom made T-shirts.

The challenge was to transform a .PSD file into code, and allow the Pants Dance owner to create an manage content in the website. First, I created a template starting from the .PSD file, then I integrated it with Joomla. The whole process was accompanied by the designer and everything he designed came to fruition.

The key points of this website was the the integration of flash player into the website, the customization of Joomla components, and close contact with the designer.

Espalma

www.espalma.com

Espalma.com was meant to give Espalma by Cobra and Lintex Linens an effective online showcase of their products.

Each item on the main menu is a type of product that Espalma works with, and each product type has different categories. Espalma wanted to display all of the products and categories in an easy to navigate template, and they also wanted to have the ability to manage and website by themselves. That could be easily achieved only using a CMS, but fortunately I came across the ZOO component for Joomla, which is the appropriate tool for this kind of job. I could separate products and categories in a very comprehensible pattern, both for the user and site administrator.

To make sure Espalma staff could easily update the website without any help, I made short tutorials explaining how to create and manage content with Joomla and ZOO component.

Design, Flash, Maya 3d

Verde Ambiente is a resort in the southern Brazil.

When I was contacted by the owner, I was asked to bring the resort's concept to the internet, which was a real challenge for me. After several design attempts, we agree that the actual layout was what the resort should be like on the internet.

The website was built with Flash action script 2. I used Maya 3d to create textures and background images and photoshop to resize and enhance images.
